It’s holiday time, and if the thought of exposing your wobbly bits to the world fills you with dread, you’re not alone. Cellulite – that dimply, orange peel skin we all loathe – affects more than 90 per cent of us – and you don’t have to be old or overweight to get it. Even the rich and famous aren’t immune with A-listers like Cindy Crawford, Gwyneth Paltrow and Sienna Miller all owning up to having lumpy bits. So what is this stubborn substance that makes so many of our lives a misery, and what can we do about it?

    What is it?
Dimpled, mottled skin – particularly on the thighs, bottom and tummy – caused by irregular fatty deposits pushing against the connective tissue underneath. The experts are still debating why this happens, but genetics, hormones, age, the amount of fat on your body, the way fat is distributed, poor circulation, diet and lifestyle have all been linked to it.

    Do men get it?
Some do, but the majority of sufferers are women – they carry more fat on their bottoms and thighs than men and their skin and connective tissue is structured differently, making them more prone to it.

How do I get rid of it?
Sadly, there is no miracle cure for cellulite, but you can improve its appearance by changing your lifestyle and trying some of the products and treatments on the market.

    Cellulite-busting tips

    • Do eat healthily. Many experts believe what you put in your mouth can have a real impact on cellulite. Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, chicken, fish, beans, fat-free dairy products and wholegrains, and moderate amounts of lean red meat, eggs, nuts and healthy fats form the basis of many cellulite-busting diet plans.
    • Don’t crash diet. If you shed weight too quickly you’ll lose muscle tone and highlight any lumps and bumps even further. About 1-2lb a week is considered a sensible weight loss.
    • Do get active. ‘While there are no magic exercises to eradicate cellulite, there are things you can do to help improve it,’ says Ray Kelly, a personal trainer at London’s Sanderson Hotel. ‘Exercises that stimulate blood flow can help boost the circulatory system, which helps clear waste and blocked tissue.’
    • Don’t overload your system with toxins. ‘The idea is to flush out all the junk in your body with the exercise, so don’t dump it all back in by smoking, drinking booze and eating processed foods,’ says Ray. Drink plenty of water, too, and cut down on caffeine.
    • Do use anti-cellulite creams and treatments to smooth, tone and temporarily tighten the skin, improving the appearance of those problem areas.
    • Don’t expect these products to get rid of your cellulite completely. Nothing on the market has been proven, without a doubt, to get eradicate it, but you may see a visible improvement.
