Reduced-fat sausages, skimmed milk and less oil make this a healthier option than traditional recipes

Serves 4
Ready in 1 hour
Price per serving 80p

1tsp sunflower oil
454g pack Asda Reduced-fat Pork Sausages
115g plain flour
2 large free-range eggs
1 level tbsp Asda Coarse Grain Mustard
275ml skimmed milk
2 level tsp chopped fresh thyme leaves or ½ level tsp dried thyme or mixed herbs

  1. Preheat the oven to 220C/200C Fan/Gas 7. Grease a small roasting tin with the oil and put the sausages in it, leaving a small gap between each. Cook in the oven for 15 minutes or until they just start to brown.
  2. Meanwhile sift the flour into a bowl with a good pinch of salt. Make a well in the centre and break in the egg. Add the mustard and a splash of milk and mix with a wire whisk to make a thick batter. Gradually whisk in the rest of the milk. Add the thyme and season with pepper.
  3. Remove the sausages from the oven and immediately pour over the batter. Return to the oven for 30-35 minutes.

How we did it

  • We saved 90 calories and 10g fat per portion by using just 1tsp of oil to grease the dish, rather than the 3tbsp that is usually used.
  • We saved 192 calories and 24.4g fat per portion by using reduced-fat pork sausages instead of regular pork sausages.
  • We saved 24 calories and 2.5g fat by using skimmed milk instead of whole milk.
  • Altogether we saved 306 calories, 37g fat and 12g saturated fat per portion.
